8 Rules to Overcoming Social Media Craziness

After you have mastered all of those website obstacles, it’s time to start spreading the good word about your website or blog. Social media is causing quite the commotion on the web and everyone is trying to understand it. There is Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, and about 15 other social media websites. Here are some rules to remember when trying to figure out social media and overcome its craziness:
- Choose your social media wisely. Yes, it’s exciting that there are tons of different social media opportunities but you don’t want to overload yourself. Pick one or two to start with and go from there.
- Limit your posting to only relevant information. If you are on Facebook, then you know people are constantly updating their statuses. Businesses don’t need to bombard their Facebook fan page 900 times a day.
- Talk to employees about social media and its consequences. One thing that is true in social media today is that it can get you in a lot of trouble. A wrong word or status update from a flustered employee can really ruin your online presence.
- Use efficiency when using social media. There are tons of applications that allow you to update one social media site and the others are updated too. You may not realize how much time it takes to update each and every social media site you are a part of.
- Understand the reasoning behind social media. Take your own personal reasons for using social media and apply those to your business. Social media is about feeling connected and spreading the word. Use social media to foster relationships and target your customers. Don’t use it as a bragging board or to bring down other businesses.
- Interact with your fan base. In other words, have a little fun with your audience. No one likes “serious Sally” all of the time. Just remember that there is a time and place for everything. Talk to your customers or fans and let them know you’re a real person too.
- Jump in with both feet. Social media is not something you can just partially attend. If you are going to use social media, then use it to its full capacity. Too many times you see companies only update their status a few times a week. Why are you on Facebook or Twitter?
- Don’t spam the wall feed. Everyone likes a good laugh, but no need to share 15,000 things to make someone laugh. Keep it classy and your customers will appreciate that about you.
