Being an Intern is all About Getting out of your Comfort Zone
Me! Write a blog!? No Way!
Let me start off by being completely honest: when I was first asked to write my own blog post for Cheeky Monkey Media (CMM), I was profoundly scared of having to dive into it. I have never really considered myself a “writer” nor had I gone out of my way to write much more than what was required by my high school and early college classes. And that feels like forever ago…
So I found myself thinking, “I write in languages for machines to understand, why do they want me to write for humans?”
The Truth About Being an Intern
After giving that question some thought the reason came to me in the shower, where these big realizations often happen for me, and it was suddenly so obvious. Being scared, anxious, and nervous is what being an intern is all about. It's supposed to bring you out of your comfort zone to do and try things that you wouldn’t normally, all in the hopes that you will become better because of it. So without further ado, here is my experience as a Monkey Intern at the great CMM!
The Intern Experience
As cliché as it may sound, I really did not have many expectations when I started my internship here at Cheeky Monkey about 5 weeks ago. I knew there were going to be a lot of challenges and growing pains, in terms of just learning how to be a developer at a real company and how best to work remotely, and I was not wrong. While these were areas of concern for me going in, I felt like everyone at Cheeky Monkey went out of their way to help me grow as a developer and communicator. Slack, Google Hangouts, and join.me have become very good friends of mine over the past month in order to help facilitate a lot of the communication between myself and the rest of the team.
One of my main concerns going into a remote internship was the availability of the Senior Developers to help when my Google skills failed me.
I am extremely grateful that all of the other Monkeys put that concern to rest very quickly. My fellow Epicodus alum and Monkey Intern, Jordan, and I were quickly put on a project to build a core set of Behat tests for Drupal 7 sites. Seeing as how this was also relatively new to most at CMM, it really required me to hone my research and processing skills. It also gave me great insight that with projects of this nature, where it hasn’t ever fully been done before, it involves a lot of trial and error. Along with great patience! Because let’s be frank, there were a few times where I wanted to curl up in the fetal position when things were not working for hours on end. I always knew that aspect is part of the life of a developer, but seeing and dealing with it firsthand was a nice learning experience.
It was Worth It!
Ultimately the great people working at Cheeky Monkey Media and their drive to aid in their client’s success is a very contagious thing and would cause anybody to get excited. My peers called me crazy for interning full-time and working as a server/bartender part-time but I wouldn’t trade the ups and downs of the job experience for anything. Just keep swinging, monkeys!
