Remembering the Google Update with the Thanos Easter Egg

In the ever-evolving digital landscape, every Google update often sends tremors through the community. Whether it’s whispers of the latest Google algorithm update, speculations around the intricacies of a Google core update, or the buzz regarding potential shifts in SEO paradigms, we’re always on our toes. These updates, ranging from core modifications to algorithm tweaks, have become milestones in digital progression.

However, amidst these serious and often daunting updates, Google has a knack for sprinkling in some delightful surprises that offer a refreshing departure from the norm. Back in 2019, as SEO experts and webmasters scanned forums and blogs for the slightest hint of a major Google core update or any other changes in the algorithm, Google unveiled an easter egg that quickly became the talk of the town.

Merging the realms of technology with popular culture, this Google update was a stark reminder that the tech giant, beyond its algorithmic complexities, also prioritizes engagement, interaction, and sheer fun. The beauty of such updates lies in their ability to bridge the gap between hard-core tech enthusiasts and the general public, offering a universal talking point. And this particular update, well, it was a masterstroke in playful creativity.

So, as we take a trip down memory lane, let’s dive into one of Google’s most iconic easter eggs…

Have you seen the new easter egg Google put up in preparation for Avengers Endgame? It’s pretty dang cool! We were just doing our monkey thang the other morning when Alex, our tech lead and an all-around kickass guy, stuck his head over his monitors (kinda like Wilson from Home Improvement), and said, “Hey, did anybody see this Thanos thing on Google?”

Right away we all searched for it, but he was the only one who could see it! Clearly, this hasn’t rolled out to everyone quite yet (as of writing on April 25, 2019). Some of the monkeys in our office get it, and others don’t! If you’re one of the people who can’t see it, don’t worry! We recorded it for you! Check out our video below to see how to trigger the easter egg and what it does.

How to trigger “the snap.”

  1. Search for “Thanos” on Google.
  2. Look for the Infinity Gauntlet illustration in the sidebar to the right of the results.
  3. Click the Gauntlet.
  4. ???
  5. PROFIT!!! (Or eliminate 50% of all life in the universe. That’s the same thing, right?)
